Labelling projects in the Inbox

Time and tracking. Confirm who each new project's work is for and what kind of work it is.

When Cardinal sees a new project folder, it doesn't know who the work is for. The Inbox lists every project waiting for a label. Overview shows a notice with a link when any are waiting.

A label has two parts

  • Owner: who the work is for, usually a client's name. Use "Personal" for your own things.
  • Work type: client-billable, client-non-billable, own-product or internal.

The owner links the project to a client (and creates the client if it's new), so its time and money show under that client. The work type sets whether its time is billable by default.

Confirming

For each project the Inbox shows the name, its git remote or folder, and a suggestion with the reason, for example a matching rule or a similar project. Check it, change it if you need to, and press Confirm. When nothing is left, the page says "Every project is labelled".

Suggestions from rules

In Settings, Label rules is a list of rules in JSON. Each rule has a match text, an owner and a workType. The match is checked against the project name, git remote and folder paths. For example, a rule matching rleaf can suggest owner Rleaf and work type client-billable.

Changing a label later

  • Edit the whole project's label on its page with "Edit label".
  • Change just one session from the session's page.
  • From Claude Code, /hours label sets the label for the project you're in.
