Starting and stopping the timer

Time and tracking. The Start and Stop control in the top bar, the s key, and what happens to entries left running.

The workspace owner has a Start and Stop control in the top bar on every page.

Start

Press Start (or s anywhere) to open a small form. Choose a client (required), a project if you like, a kind and a note. Kind defaults to coding when you pick a project, otherwise other. The entry starts now.

While it runs the control shows a pulsing dot, the time so far, and the client and project. On a phone it shows only the dot, the time and Stop.

The running entry is saved in Cardinal, not in your browser, so it keeps running when you reload, change page or open Cardinal on another computer.

Starting a new entry while one runs stops the first one now, then starts the new one.

Stop

Press Stop to open the same form. Fill in or change the project, kind and note, then save. The entry ends now, and the control says what was saved.

  • Under a minute: nothing is saved ("Nothing saved (under a minute).").
  • The entry goes through the same checks as one you type in by hand.
  • Once an entry has run over 12 hours, the form shows "Stopped at (SAST)". Past 24 hours you must enter the time you actually stopped.

Esc closes the form.

Entries left running

After 12 hours, Overview and Day show a notice, for example "Rleaf is still running since 21:10 SAST (12:50 so far). Did you forget to stop it?", with a field for the stop time. A time at or before the start means the next day. Cardinal never stops an entry silently.

Two tabs at once

Only one entry can run at a time. If two tabs press Start together, one shows "An entry is already running." and then the running entry.
